Mariah Barber is a spoken word poet and radio personality who has been honing her way with words for over ten years. She is native to North Carolina and currently resides in New York. Mariah is a former member of Word of Mouth East Carolina University's official Spoken Word poetry team and is a currently a member of the Nitty Gritty Albany New York Slam team. She has competed in several poetry competitions such as College Union Poetry Slam Invitational (CUPSI 2014,2015,2016) and been featured across the country. Including Colorado, New York, Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland, California, Texas and of course her home state of North Carolina. During 2012 Barber was afforded the honor of being the opening act for Dr. Nikki Giovanni. In 2014 Mariah Barber became the first College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational National Haiku Slam Champion. In 2016 Barber was contracted by the Raleigh Museum of Art to craft a spoken word piece to accompany the opening exhibition of a Kehinde Wiley original. She conducts writers workshops for all ages on taping into creatively and the positive benefits of self expression. M. Barber's work is inspired by Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, injustice, love, and the black family in America.
